The application deadline for Short term letting licensing scheme has been put on hold for 6 months for existing hosts.

Licensing came into force on 1st October 2022 for new operators of short-term lets but existing operators originally had until 1st April 2023 to make their application however this has now been delayed by six months. According to Scottish Government this is a ‘one-off six month extension’.

The reason for the delay is because of concerns relating to vital accommodation needed for 2023’s cultural events and specifically the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which has historically relied heavily on holiday let type accommodation. Festival organisers and other tourism groups were concerned about the loss of thousands of bedrooms for performers and workers, potentially risking the longer term viability of such an important event for Edinburgh’s economy.
